WHITEBOARD – 10 January 2011

Workload:

8 Rounds of Tabata Row (20s on 10s off):

Immediately follow it with:

8 Rounds of:

5 Chin-ups
8 Sandbag Halfmoons (30/15lbs – See Video Below)

http://www.cathletics.com/exercises/exercise.php?exerciseID=264

Notes: Make sure you are away of the back angle during the Halfmoons.  Even with the lower weight we don’t want the low back to take a nasty hit on the workout.  Work on proper form and make the abs work by controlling your spine.  Also, full arm extension at the top of the Halfmoons.

    Tabata row: 75kcal 964m

    Wod: Rx’d ~16:00

Really felt the weight I’ve recently put on in the chin-ups. I really need to work on my bodyweight pulling motions.

Also, about 3-4 rounds in, I started to get a very clear metallic taste in my mouth followed immediately by dizziness. If anyone has any idea what that is or how to “fix” it, please let me know as it is still happening every one in a while.

    • You get the taste during conditioning work or strength work?

I usually get it during endurance work, although sometimes it happens randomly while at work. I’ve never gotten it when doing pure strength work.

      • Get it at work after working out?

      • I have heard of the “penny” taste from long distance athletes before. I always thought it was from blood vessels bursting and you tasting the iron. I think this is why most long distance athletes experience it more in cold or dry air conditions – Wild guess though. I know there are some more reasons to get a metallic taste all the time (dehydration, edema, malnutrition).

But if you only get it during endurance work it sounds pretty common to me.

If Mat L is paying attention to this he may have experience with it since he comes from a endurance background.

It may be some malnutrition. Looking back on what ive eaten the past few days, I havent eaten as much as i have been. Maybe it is a migraine brought on by dehydration. I’ll keep hydrating, eat and take some tylenol.

      • Best bet is to make sure you are fully hydrated going into your training and try to do rehydrate with water post workout. Make sure are fully hydrsted a couple hours begire working out so you dont get a “water belly”. See if that doesn’t change things. If not back to the drawling boards.

Every once in a while. Like, I am still getting it now but not nearly as frequently. It’s happened twice since I’ve come back from the gym about an hour ago. I’ve been downing Powerade and water thinking that it is dehydration based.

  5. matl's avatar matl says:

yeah, the metallic taste is common with anaerobic exercise, particularly when your heart rate is elevating and you cannot keep up with the bodies metabolic demands for blood … the blood backflows and is not clearing the lungs and then basically you get some blood cells in your saliva and since there is iron in them you taste it ..
if you combine the intensity of the WOD today, along with the quantity of muscles being used, especially between the row and halfmoons it should make sense .. also consider that fact that since it sounds like you have been dong more weight intensive WODs vs. anaerobic stuff ….
dehydration may play a role in it because your blood essentially turns to sludge when you are dehyrated, making the heart work harder to move it through the system ..
if you are getting it in non-exercise states I would go to your primary

    • Again, another excellent post from Mat. Thank you!

Thanks mat that was a great explanation. I believe it was dehydration because i drank a steady stream of fluids for a couple of hours and began to feel better. Also, I ate a bigger lunch than i have been and that helped as well. Back to normal as of now.

    889m/63cal
minor delay before i could get to the second part because someone lost the key to the closet, so i timed it separately: 8:24
the last two chin-ups of each set required some kipping

  7. Brian's avatar Brian says:

    894m

Wod 2 completed untimed and unbroken with some Kipping in there too.

Paul it is possible the metal taste came from when you were chewing nails while you were doing hatch.

No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. If a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as well as if a manor of thy friend's or of thine own were. Any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind; and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee...
