Snatch & Confidence

Well did a heavy snatch workout today (3-3-2-1-1). I hit a PR by 15 pounds (215). Funny thing was my form was shot to hell today. It got me thinking about why I was able to hit a PR even though I wasn’t executing the lift properly.

I realized it all had to do with confidence. When you teach an athlete the 3rd pull of the snatch (where you actively pull yourself under the bar), nerves eventually set in as the weight increases.

The inability to commit to the 3rd pull is a strong contributing factor to why a lot of athletes have similar numbers for their power lifts (lack of flexibility and practice are two others). It is not a natural movement to free fall under a heavy weight, all the while knowing you will have to catch it at some point. Think about trying to catch you falling body with shoulders active, does that sounds like fun?

The point is, I was able to composite for my miscues in the first & second pull by being deliberate with the 3rd. Am I happy with the lifts? No. But, I am happy that I am able to calm my nerves before a PR and pull it off even when it was not executed 100% correct.

I will go back to the drawling board and fix my first pull. I believe once I get my back angle correct and drill in the pocket position my second pull will fall inline and my PR will only get better.

Remember confidence can go a long way!

No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. If a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as well as if a manor of thy friend's or of thine own were. Any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind; and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee...
