Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing

It looks like the topic of taking advice from an individual that doesn’t appear to “walk the talk” was brought up on Mark’ Daily Apple.

He argues that we should only be content driven in our decisions and not let our initial impressions influence our deductions.

He discusses personal appearance and if it should affect their validity as an expert. Well, should looks/performance matter in a body focused industry?

I am a strong believer in substance over style. I always question my initial impressions of a trainer, and try to look at what content they are delivering to their clients.

However, as stated yesterday I do judge a trainer if they don’t practice what they preach…

Following me? I don’t believe looks or performance are markers of a great trainer (athlete, yes), but I do believe practicing what you preach is an important sign of a trainer’s character and the validity of the content they are providing.

As pointed out in Mark’s Daily Apple different people will get varying results following different programs. You could have “Athlete A” eat cheesecake and candy his whole life and still perform better than “Athlete B” who ate clean quality food and followed a great training program.

Results vary – genetics, injury history, and a slew of other variables have a strong influence on results. I don’t look at results I look at THEIR BEHAVIOR. Does your trainer eat what he tells you too, or at least follows the same general guideline? Does your trainer have experience in the programming and movements they are providing you. Again, I am not talking specifics because everyone’s lifestyle/training goals are different. But, are they buying into what they are selling?

I guess my point is this, if the content a trainer is selling you is valid, then why wouldn’t they be following a similar template?

Who do you want as a trainer, someone that looks the part (ex:Julian Michaels) or someone that acts the part (ex: Dan John).

I am a legitimate trainer... I swear! It

  • John Donne – Meditation 17

No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. If a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as well as if a manor of thy friend's or of thine own were. Any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind; and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee...
