What’s the end goal?

Made it home today! Moved up my flight so I got in before the supposed big bad storm, but I haven’t seen anything on the ground yet. So, I am sitting here with my family feeling grateful for the day.

After a long work week, away from a family you love, doing work that is not your life’s work, you start to evaluate your immediate and long term goals. What’s the my end goal? To create an environment and training facility that not only provides a great product to the client, but also calls to your hearts. How do you do this, through simple DESIGN.

Design in its essence is functionality and aesthetics. The measurement of the functionality of a training facility would be the level of results the community is getting. If a gym is producing a healthy and fit community then they are doing what they need to do. There is no way around this, if your gym membership is not benefiting you then CANCEL. You need to find the environment that benefits you.

The second part of design is aesthetics. For the purpose of a small business I will think of aesthetics as the “vibe” that someone gets coming in the door. What personality does a buisness take on? How do you feel when you walk through the door of a Dunkin Donuts? How do you feel when you walk through the door of your favorite local coffee shop? Think of your gym as the same, (EX: LA Fitness/Golds/etc. to your local gym). Sure Dunkin Donuts provides a homogenized service that likely won’t disappoint, but it will never fully satisfy you. That local shop, when it is run right makes you WANT to come back. I want to eventually build a gym that fosters an environment that is positive and makes you want to walk through the door.

So one day, when I greet you as you walk through the door, I will know you want to be there. Not because you feel like you “have” to workout, but because you truely see the benefit of doing so. You WANT to better yourself.

What does this long term goal mean to me now? It means I will continue to further my education as a trainer, but it also means I will take in as much information from business owners I respect within the field (Cosgrove, Wolf, Robinson, Simmons, Tate, etc.) but take notice of companies outside the fitness industry.

Next time you walk through the door of your favorite shop, restuarant, etc. take a moment to ask yourself why you love being there.

Well with that said, I am off to enjoy the night and watch a little Shark Tank.

Got a good idea?

  • John Donne – Meditation 17

No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. If a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as well as if a manor of thy friend's or of thine own were. Any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind; and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee...
